A man, with the help of his brother, allegedly killed his daughter for having a live-in relationship before secretly conducting her last rites overnight in Gujarat's Banaskantha. The incident came to light after the victim's lover, who was arrested, moved the Gujarat High Court and filed a plea seeking relief in the matter.
According to information, the victim, Chandrika, had fallen in love with Haresh earlier this year when they met in Palanpur. The couple began living together in Ahmedabad in June after making a live-in agreement. They later travelled together to Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.
While the couple was away, Chandrika’s family filed a missing complaint. On June 12, police traced the duo in Rajasthan. Chandrika was handed over to her family, while Haresh was jailed in connection with previous cases.
After being released on June 21, Haresh discovered deleted data on his phone. Upon checking his Instagram, he found several messages from Chandrika.
In her messages, Chandrika expressed fear for her life. "The police cheated us. My family will get me married. If I don't listen, they will kill me," one message read.
Fearing for her safety, Haresh approached the Gujarat High Court. But before the court could hear the case, Chandrika was declared dead on June 24, with her family claiming it was a suicide.
Haresh, however, alleged that Chandrika was murdered by her father and uncle. According to his complaint, they gave her sleeping pills, hanged her, and cremated her body the same night to destroy evidence.
Following Haresh’s petition, the police have registered a case under sections 103(1), 123, 238, and 54 of the Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS). Authorities confirmed that the accused have been taken into custody and further investigation is underway.
"The case has been registered today. We have detained the accused, and further action will be taken after questioning," said a police official.
