Man kills wife in Shiroda, surrenders

Ponda: Chetan Gaonkar, 34, a resident of Shirwada-Shiroda, in Ponda taluka, surrendered before Shiroda police on Saturday afternoon stating that he had killed his wife Hema, 31, by smashing her head with a stone.

Following this, Ponda police staff along with Ponda DySP Shivram Vaingankar and PI Vijaynath Kavlekar rushed to the Shiroda outpost and based on his confession, detained him. Later, police visited Gaonkar’s house and found his wife lying in a pool of blood on the bed. The accused had reportedly smashed her head with a rubble stone while she was asleep.Gaonkar told police that their marital relationship was strained.

Both of them were suspecting that their spouse had an extramarital affair, police said.The couple were married five years ago and have a two-and-a-half year-old child who is presently with his paternal grandmother. Hema hailed from Talewada-Bethora, while Chetan is originally from Talpan-Shiroda.They had constructed a new house at Shirwada-Shiroda where the crime occured. While Chetan works as an attendant at a govt office, Hema was a primary school teacher at Farmagudi.

Police have preserved the body at the mortuary of the South Goa District Hospital at Margao for an autopsy that is likely to be conducted on Sunday.An FIR of murder was being registered against the Gaonkar at the Ponda police station on late Saturday evening. Ponda PI Kavlekar is the investigation officer.
