Colva: In what has become a rare occurrence in recent years, a theft case in Goa wrapped up in just under three months after the accused chose to plead guilty — bringing an unusually swift end to both court proceedings and his time in jail.Venkatesh Nayak was arrested on May 8 by Maina-Curtorim police for allegedly stealing an e-scooter, a bicycle, and a mobile handset from a house near the Ravanfond military camp. He was charged under Section 303(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.The case took an unexpected turn on July 7, when Nayak, represented by his lawyer, appeared before judicial magistrate first class Sabino Adrian Braganza. Even before the charges could be fully explained, he said he will plead guilty and said the same on July 18 during the second hearing.
Noting his voluntary admission, the judge accepted the plea and convicted him on July 22. “Considering the records and the intention of pleading guilty, Nayak can be sentenced to simple imprisonment which will serve the end of justice,” the court said.Nayak was sentenced to 70 days of simple imprisonment. Since he had already spent 83 days in custody, the sentence was set off against his time served. The court then ordered his immediate release, provided he was not wanted in any other crime.
