Manchester United’s ascent to the top three continues.
The Red Devils moved to the brink of UEFA Champions League qualification with a 2-1 win over Brentford at Old Trafford on Monday.
Goals from Casemiro and Benjamin Sesko gave the hosts control, and although Mathias Jensen struck late, it wasn’t enough to derail them.
The result tightens United’s grip on third place in the Premier League. They sit 11 points clear of sixth-placed Brighton & Hove Albion, with a top-five finish enough to secure Champions League football.
With four games left, Michael Carrick’s side need just two more points to confirm their return to Europe’s top competition for the first time since 2023–24.
Carrick, in interim charge since replacing Ruben Amorim in January, continues to build a case for the permanent role. A Champions League berth would strengthen his position as co-owner Jim Ratcliffe weighs his options.
How The Match Unfolded
United started quickly. Kobbie Mainoo carved open the Brentford defence inside two minutes, but Amad Diallo couldn’t convert. The pressure told soon after. In the 11th minute, Bruno Fernandes delivered a corner that eventually fell to Casemiro, who headed in from close range.
It was his fourth goal in six games, a timely reminder of his influence with his contract winding down. He marked it by kissing the badge as fans responded with chants of “one more year."
Brentford had chances — Igor Thiago and Michael Kayode both went close — but lacked a clinical edge. United made them pay just before half-time. A turnover led by Diallo allowed Fernandes to thread a pass to Sesko, who finished from 10 yards.
Fernandes now has 19 assists this season, one shy of the single-season record shared by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.
The second half was less controlled. Jensen’s 87th-minute strike set up a tense finish, but United held on, with Senne Lammens making a key stoppage-time save.
Next up: Liverpool at Old Trafford, and a result there could all but settle the race for third.
