The ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel has sparked concern even in India, where several families are anxiously waiting for news from relatives stranded in the conflict-hit regions.
Among them is Zakir Hussain, who has been repeatedly checking his phone for any update from his brother, sister-in-law and their children, who are currently in Iran for Islamic studies. The only contact he managed was a brief half-minute call with his daughter before her phone was switched off.
Speaking to PTI, Hussain expressed concern and said, “There was a call last night that lasted barely half a minute. “My daughter managed to say, ‘Do not worry, we are fine,’ before the line went dead."
Hussain said he is especially worried about his wife, who suffers from anxiety. “I cannot even tell her the full extent of the situation," he said. “I fear that if I disclose the reality of the conditions there, her health will deteriorate further."
Another family from Ambari village is going through a similar ordeal. Ayub Khan said his nephew and the nephew’s wife have been living in Iran for the past four years, where they are studying to become clerics.
Khan said he received a phone call from his nephew on Wednesday night informing him that they were safe inside their hostel, which is about 100 kilometres away from Tehran. “However, the fear remains that the situation could change at any moment," Khan added.
The families said their concerns have not yet reached the Union government or the Ministry of External Affairs.
Hussain said officials from the Local Intelligence Unit (LIU) had earlier visited the village and collected details such as names, addresses and passport information of the people stranded in Iran. However, since then, the families claim they have received no updates or assurance from the authorities.
With uncertainty growing, the families are now appealing to the government to step in and take necessary steps to ensure the safe return of their relatives from Iran.
