Manchester United now hold a record that no other team in the Premier League does: they are the only club ever to start a season with their first two goals being Own Goals. According to Opta, this has never happened before in the 32-year-long modern history of the competition.
They made the record on Saturday (August 30) against Burnley FC at Old Trafford with their second goal of the season. Captain Bruno Fernandes looped in a flat and quick free-kick from a brilliant spot between the box and the corner flag. Casemiro got a meaty header on it, but it bounced off the post, only to divert back into the midfielder, Josh Cullen, who was caught unaware and got hit by it.
The ball diverted back off his body towards the goal. Martin Dúbravka tried to snatch it back but got a second too late, and the referee declared that it had crossed the line.
This followed another own goal from their 1-1 draw at Fulham on Sunday. Even at that time, it was a set-piece.
Bryan Mbuemo curled a big, flighted in-swinger, and French defender Leny Yoro reared up to head it in, but the ball was going wide until it hit Fulham forward Rodrigo Muniz in the crowd and diverted inside. There was a chance before that for United to open their scoring after Mason Mount won a controversial penalty during another corner, but Fernandes smashed it wide off the post.
Bryan Mbuemo opens the open-play scoring
United eventually got their open-play goal in the second half against Burnley. New signing Mbuemo swept home a clinical finish off a nice cut-back from Diogo Dalot to open his scoring for the club in the Premier League as well. He was under pressure after being heckled off the ground after missing the decisive penalty against fourth-division side Grimsby Town in the League Cup.
United will hope that this goal turns around their and coach Ruben Amorim’s fortunes for good this season.
