Manipur’s road accident mortality rate triples national average

Imphal: At least 834 people have died in road accidents in Manipur over the past seven years, with the state’s road accident mortality rate reaching 29%, significantly surpassing the national average of 9.3%.This was revealed by Manipur’s additional chief secretary, Anurag Bajpai, during a state-level workshop on Monday. The workshop, held at the Institute of Driver Training and Research Centre in Imphal East, focused on the Electronic Detailed Accident Report (eDAR), the Cashless Treatment of Road Accident Victims Scheme 2025, and the Compensation to Victims of Hit and Run Vehicles Accident Scheme.Bajpai highlighted the pressing issue of road safety in Manipur, citing data from the ministry of road transport and highways.

He noted that India recorded over 4.80 lakh road accidents in 2023. Over the past seven years, more than 3,000 accidents took place in Manipur alone, resulting in 834 fatalities. He stressed the potential of the eDAR and the Cashless Treatment of Road Accident Victims Scheme 2025 to revolutionize emergency response and digital governance. “The mortality rate of road accidents in Manipur is very high, which clearly indicates the urgent need for implementing the schemes in a comprehensive and effective manner.

Thousands of people are affected by road accidents every year, and these measures aim to provide timely assistance and support to the victims and their families,” Bajpai said.Bajpai pointed out the lack of adequate skills among police and paramilitary personnel in handling road accident cases and safely transporting victims to hospitals. “Proper training and skill development are crucial for police, paramilitary forces, and administrative officials to ensure timely and effective emergency response,” he said, urging every police station to ensure the proper implementation and regular updating of the eDAR system.
