Theatre is the best training ground for any actor

Manish Chaudhari, known for projects like Socha Na Tha, Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year, Sanam Teri Kasam, Aarya, Bombay Begums, and Aap Jaisa Koi, will soon be seen in The Ba**ds of Bollywood.

An actor who has successfully balanced cinema, OTT, and theatre, he admits that it is theatre that continues to ground him and sharpen his craft. He is currently preparing for his upcoming play Badalon Ka Sheher. On the difference between performing for the screen and the stage, he says, “We spend a lot of time rehearsing for stage work. Of course, preparation is needed for all forms of acting, but theatre demands more because it is live — there are no retakes.”He points out that a play unfolds in real time, running for 75 to 120 minutes, which requires actors to hold the audience’s attention without breaks. “It’s very important to connect with the audience through the story and ensure it is received in the best way possible. That takes time, and it’s what makes theatre special,” he explains. When asked if theatre remains the ultimate training ground, Manish is unequivocal.

He says, “Theatre is crucial for honing your skills as an actor and for understanding the non-linearity of emotion. To work on stage is a privilege, and I would call it the best training ground.”For younger actors who often perceive stage work as less glamorous than screen roles, Manish has clear advice. He says, “Theatre is the best training ground for any actor, regardless of age. Actors should turn to the stage to learn the craft and build skills that remain essential across all mediums.”
