In a joint crackdown, the Jharkhand Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and Ranchi Police have arrested four Naxal operatives, including Yogendra Ganjhu, a sub-zonal commander of the outlawed CPI (Maoist) in the Koyal-Shankh Zone. The arrests were made from the Khalari police station area on the outskirts of Ranchi.
Ganjhu, a repeat offender, had earlier served time for one of the most disturbing attacks in Jharkhand’s Maoist history by planting IEDs inside the bodies of slain policemen in Latehar’s Garu region. Released from jail recently, police say he was once again attempting to revive operations by extorting local businesses and targeting employees of Central Coalfields Limited (CCL).
The action came after a CCL employee filed a complaint about a Rs 1 crore levy demand. The caller, identifying himself as “Manoj ji," threatened to kill the employee if the money wasn’t paid. The Maoist group had also reportedly issued similar threats to local traders, triggering concerns about a fresh wave of extortion and intimidation in Ranchi’s coal belt.
Ranchi SSP Chandan Kumar Sinha confirmed that the operation was based on intelligence shared by ATS. Along with Yogendra Ganjhu, the police arrested Mukesh Ganjhu, Manu Ganjhu, and Rajkumar Nahak. A SIM card used for issuing the threats was allegedly bought for Rs 10,000, hinting at a calculated effort to remain off police radar.
“After his release, Yogendra was trying to regroup and collect funds for the Maoist outfit," SSP Sinha said, adding that the police and ATS are closely tracking the movement of other suspected operatives. Raids are ongoing to locate more members believed to be part of this network.
While the arrests have disrupted immediate threats, authorities are urging continued vigilance. The area remains sensitive, and police believe more Maoist operatives could be trying to re-establish their presence in and around Ranchi.
