Marathon, tug-of-war to be held in Karnataka’s Chamarajanagar to mark National Sports Day on August 29

As part of the National Sports Day celebrations marking the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand, a 5-km marathon and a tug-of-war competition for both men and women will be held in Karnataka’s Chamarajanagar on August 29 at 7 a.m.

Deputy Commissioner Shilpa Nag announced this after releasing the poster of the events at her office in Chamarajanagar on Friday.

The marathon, jointly organised by the District Administration, Zilla Panchayat, Police Department, Education Department, and the Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports, will begin at the Chamarajeshwara Temple and pass through Pachappa Circle, B. Rachayya Double Road, the Deputy Commissioner’s office, the office of the Superintendent of Police, and Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Circle at Ramasamudra, before returning via Double Road to conclude at the Chamarajeshwara Temple.

The event is open to the public, sportspersons, school and college students, and members of various organisations. Cash prizes have been announced for marathon winners — ₹3,000 for first place, ₹2,500 for second place, ₹2,000 for third place, ₹1,500 for fourth place, ₹1,000 for fifth place, and ₹500 for sixth place.

A special tug-of-war competition has also be organised, with prizes of ₹3,000 for first place and ₹2,000 for second place. Registrations will be accepted on a first-come-first-serve basis, and participants must register by August 27. Highlighting the importance of physical fitness, Ms. Nag noted that lifestyle diseases such as diabetes are on the rise due to lack of regular exercise, and urged children, youth, and senior citizens to participate in the event to stay active and healthy.
