Marc Marquez’s determined quest for a seventh world title continued on Sunday as he easily secured victory in the Hungarian MotoGP.
The 32-year-old Spanish Ducati rider achieved his seventh consecutive sprint race/MotoGP double, defeating fellow Spaniard Pedro Acosta on a KTM, with Marco Bezzecchi on an Aprilia finishing third.
Equally remarkable as Marc Marquez’s performance—he is now just three wins short of matching his career best of 10 consecutive MotoGP victories—was 2024 world champion Jorge Martin’s fourth-place finish, starting from a lowly 17th on the grid.
Martin’s season has been hindered by injury, a struggle Marquez knows well from his own series of injuries. Now fully recovered, Martin has regained his form.
Marquez holds a commanding 175-point lead over his younger brother Alex Marquez, who finished 14th, with eight races remaining.
Marquez faced a challenging start in the first Hungarian MotoGP since 1992 and nearly fell when he clipped Bezzecchi on the second corner.
He dropped to third while his Ducati teammate Francesco Bagnaia, who had a disastrous qualifying session, surged from 15th to seventh.
Marc remained in contention, but his younger brother Alex saw his already slim title hopes diminish further as he crashed on the first lap.
Although Alex remounted, he dropped to 19th and last. Italian Enea Bastianini had an even worse race, ending before completing the first lap.
Bastianini slid across the track, with rivals skilfully avoiding him, before rising up and shaking his fists in frustration back to the pits.
Marc Marquez moved into second, passing Franco Morbidelli, and was less than a second behind Bezzecchi with 21 laps remaining.
Two laps later, Marquez overtook Bezzecchi, but the Italian quickly reclaimed the lead.
A cat-and-mouse game ensued between the two for the next few laps before Marquez took the lead at the beginning of the 11th of the 26 laps.
Pedro Acosta had closed in on the leading duo and was on Bezzecchi’s shoulder by the halfway mark, while Marquez was already a second ahead of them.
Acosta’s compatriot Fermin Aldeguer attempted to pass Morbidelli for fourth but crashed on the first corner of the 14th lap. He remounted but coasted around in last place.
At the same point, Bagnaia’s season took another hit.
The Italian, who has struggled since Marquez joined the team this term, was penalised with a long lap penalty for going through a chicane.
Meanwhile, Acosta had moved into second.
Bagnaia might be struggling this season, but his woes are minor compared to Martin’s.
The 27-year-old, known as ‘The Martinator,’ has missed 10 races this season due to injury, but he excelled on the sun-soaked circuit on his Aprilia.
