Margao: The heritage Margao Municipal Council building is set to get a long-overdue facelift, with the Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA) inviting tenders for its repair and renovation at an estimated cost of Rs 9 crore. The iconic 118-year-old structure, inaugurated on April 30, 1905, was built by Caetano Camilo da Silva of Orlim after its foundation stone was laid on Sep 27, 1902. Its construction was funded through heavy taxes imposed on the people of Salcete by the then governor.Over the years, the building suffered from neglect and poor maintenance. Creepers caused significant damage, and large portions of lime plaster peeled off, exposing the stone masonry underneath.
The building remained unpainted for over a decade until last year, when it was restored to its original brick-red terracotta colour. The last major renovation took place about two decades ago, ahead of the centenary celebrations. With fresh tenders now invited, heritage enthusiasts and Margao residents are hopeful that the landmark will finally receive the care it deserves.“The renovation was long overdue. The electrical fittings and equipment have outlived their utility. The antique furniture and wooden flooring also need repairs. The upcoming work will give the building a new lease of life,” a senior official said.
