In a surprising development, Manchester United have stripped Marcus Rashford of the iconic No. 10 shirt and handed it to new arrival Matheus Cunha, sources have told ESPN.

Manager Ruben Amorim is prioritizing attacking reinforcements this summer, determined to solve United’s longstanding issues in front of goal. Although the club has yet to finalize their main striker target for the new season, Cunha’s arrival marks a significant first step.

The Brazilian forward signed from Wolves on June 12 after netting 17 Premier League goals last season. Cunha has agreed to a five-year contract, with an option for a sixth year.

In addition to Cunha, United are pushing to sign Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford. The club, under INEOS sporting leadership, remains confident they can reach an agreement with Brentford for the Cameroon international.

Rashford’s Future in Doubt

Rashford, 27, has not played for United since December and spent the latter half of last season on loan at Aston Villa. He has now been instructed to delay his return to Carrington while he continues to explore a permanent move away from Old Trafford.

Taking the number 10 shirt away from Rashford is the latest hint that United are preparing to go their separate ways from the academy graduate.

Rashford previously wore the numbers 39 and 9 before getting the iconic number 10 shirt.

Before Cunha’s signing was confirmed, there was speculation over what number the Brazilian would wear at United. Having previously donned the No. 9, 12, and 19 shirts, Cunha ended his time at Wolves wearing the No. 10 during the 2024/25 campaign — a number he now inherits at United.

Several Players Seeking Exits

Cunha’s arrival comes amid further squad uncertainty. Antony, Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho, and Tyrell Malacia have all informed the club of their desire to leave this summer. Each has been granted an extended break to facilitate potential transfers.

If deals are not completed, the players are expected to return to the club later in July. Preseason training for the rest of the squad is set to begin on Monday.
