A 22-year-old MBBS student was killed and two others were seriously injured after a speeding SUV hit several two-wheeler riders in a hit-and-run incident Uttar Pradesh in Gorakhpur, police said.
The incident took place when a speeding Toyota Fortuner, driving on the wrong side of the road, rammed into the riders. Four people were hit in the collision. One scooter rider died on the spot, two others sustained serious injuries, and another person suffered minor injuries.
Due to the impact of the collision, one of the scooter riders was thrown off and got stuck in the railing of the overbridge, where he was left hanging and died.
The victim has been identified as Akash Pandey, a third-year MBBS student at BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur.
Local police were rushed to the spot and the body has been moved to hospital, senior police officer Abhinav Tyagi said.
Using CCTV footage, police traced the vehicle number and arrested the accused, identified as Golden Sahni. The SUV has been seized and a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder has been registered against the accused, police added.
