Meghalaya assembly honoured for ‘paperless’ proceedings

Shillong: The Meghalaya legislative assembly has been awarded a certificate of achievement by the Union ministry of parliamentary affairs for its successful implementation of the National eVidhan Application (NeVA).NeVA is a transformative initiative under the Digital India programme, aimed at transitioning legislative assemblies across the country to a paperless, digital system.“The Meghalaya legislative assembly has been among the leading institutions in adopting and implementing this initiative effectively,” an official statement said on Friday.Through NeVA, members can digitally access legislative business — including questions, notices, rules of procedure, and the list of business — on their tablets and devices.

The platform enables real-time information exchange between the Assembly and various government departments, enhancing transparency, efficiency, and accessibility in legislative functioning.“By moving towards a paperless workflow, NeVA has significantly reduced paper consumption, aligning with sustainable governance practices. The system also allows members to submit questions, notices, and other official inputs remotely, improving overall responsiveness,” the statement added.

To ensure smooth implementation, the Meghalaya legislative assembly has conducted regular training sessions for members, equipping them to fully utilize the digital tools and resources available through NeVA.“This recognition underscores the assembly’s commitment to innovation, transparency, and environmental responsibility through the adoption of digital governance practices,” the assembly secretariat said. The award was conferred during the 3rd national conference on NeVA, inaugurated by Union minister for parliamentary affairs Kiren Rijiju on Oct 30 at the parliament house annexe in New Delhi. An official delegation from the Meghalaya legislative assembly attended the conference and received the award.
