Meghalaya observes All Souls’ Day with Mass in cemeteries

Shillong: The annual All Souls’ Day was observed in Christian-majority Meghalaya on Sunday with solemn rituals that included cleaning graveyards, offering floral wreaths, lighting candles and celebrating Mass in cemeteries.CM Conrad K Sangma extended his tribute on social media, posting, “On this All Souls’ Day, we offer our prayers and remembrance to all those who have gone before us. May their souls find eternal peace.”A pastor at the Arbuthnot Road cemetery in Shillong said, “All Souls’ Day is observed to commemorate the faithful departed or baptized Christians.” He added that, apart from the Roman Catholic Church, other Catholic denominations also mark the day with reverence.As evening descended, cemeteries across the state glowed with candlelight. Tombstones adorned with flowers and garlands, accompanied by the gentle strains of hymns, lent a serene and reflective atmosphere to the observance in remembrance of the dearly departed.
