I was really nervous to give birth without him, too.” With little time to prepare for their baby, Meredith relied on intuition, sensing that her newborn would be a boy.

“He looks exactly like John,” she said, reflecting on Carter’s resemblance to his late father.Parenting her eldest daughter, Noa, has been equally emotional. Noa often asks why her dad isn’t there, and Meredith gently explains he’s in heaven. “She’ll say things like, ‘Let’s call him or go there,’ and I just say, ‘We can’t,’” Meredith shared, highlighting the daily heartache of raising children without Johnny.

Despite the tragedy, the NHL community has consistently supported Meredith and her family.

During the 4 Nations Face-Off in February 2025, Team USA honored Johnny with a locker stall displaying his jersey and gear. “We definitely want to win it for them, to honor Johnny and Matthew,” Brady Tkachuk noted, emphasizing the players’ tribute. The Calgary Flames also sent a customized jersey for newborn Carter, leaving Meredith deeply moved. The gestures showed that Johnny’s impact went beyond the ice, touching teammates, fans, and the wider hockey community.

Meredith expressed gratitude, noting how these acts of kindness helped her feel less alone in her journey.Fans and teammates continue to celebrate Johnny’s life and legacy. On what would have been his 32nd birthday, August 13, 2024, fans from all 32 NHL camps paid tribute, ensuring his memory remains strong.
