Former West Bengal Sports Minister Aroop Biswas has been named in an FIR registered by Bidhannagar Police following allegations of threats, extortion and ticket diversion linked to football star Lionel Messi’s proposed visit to Kolkata later this year.

The complaint was filed by Satadru Dutta, organiser of Messi’s India tour and managing director of Celebrity Management Group. Based on the complaint, police registered a case against Biswas under Sections 3(5), 308(2), 318(4), 351(2) and 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

According to Dutta, Biswas allegedly demanded a large number of complimentary tickets for the event and exerted pressure on organisers to meet the demand. The complaint further alleges that the complimentary passes were later sold in the black market at inflated prices, causing financial losses and reputational damage to the organisers.

Dutta claimed that when he resisted the demands, he was subjected to threats and intimidation. He alleged that repeated pressure was exerted on him and his associates in connection with the distribution of tickets for the high-profile event featuring the Argentine football legend.

The FIR comes amid growing anticipation around Messi’s proposed Kolkata visit, which is expected to draw thousands of football fans. The allegations have sparked political controversy in West Bengal, with opposition leaders demanding a thorough investigation into the claims.

Aroop Biswas has denied any wrongdoing and dismissed the allegations as politically motivated. He has maintained that he has no involvement in any ticket-related irregularities and accused his detractors of attempting to tarnish his image.

Police officials have confirmed that an investigation is underway and that all aspects of the complaint, including the alleged diversion and resale of complimentary tickets, will be examined. Authorities are expected to record statements from those involved and review relevant evidence as part of the probe.
