Alan Smith reveals why Lionel Messi edges Cristiano Ronaldo in crucial team-first mentality debate (Getty Images)
Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo remain football’s most compelling comparison, even as both move closer to the final chapters of their careers. The debate never really fades. It simply evolves with each passing season, each new milestone, each fresh voice weighing in.
Now, one of English football’s most respected figures has added his perspective, and he did not hesitate to draw a distinction. For Alan Smith, the conversation is not about diminishing either man. It is about appreciating two extraordinary careers while recognizing the subtle qualities that set them apart. Speaking recently in an exclusive interview with Bolavip, the former Arsenal striker reflected on greatness, longevity, and why one player edges ahead in his mind.
Why Alan Smith gives Lionel Messi the edge over Cristiano Ronaldo before the 2026 FIFA World Cup
The timing of Smith’s remarks is no coincidence. With the FIFA World Cup in 2026 approaching, both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are widely expected to make their final appearances on football’s grandest stage. Smith believes that moment could reinforce what many already feel."I’ve covered a lot of Argentina games at the World Cup and you know, there were some where Argentina were a little flat, nothing was happening and then Messi just changed it entirely, it just looked like he was made to end up a winner and be the star.
And can Ronaldo still do it? I mean, Ronaldo has been scoring fun in Saudi Arabia, obviously the standards are much different, but I think they’ll both see this as their last tournament, so they’ll be very keen to go out with a bang.
"Smith’s point speaks to timing and influence. Messi’s ability to shift the emotional weight of a match has defined his career. Ronaldo, now playing in Saudi Arabia, continues to score, though the context is different from his European peak.Longevity, Smith believes, strengthens both legacies beyond comparison with earlier icons."Doesn’t always work that way, but, yeah, I think they will be rated as the best two players of all time. Partly because of how long they’ve lasted, quite amazing. You can look at a lot of players like (Diego) Maradona, I mean Pele lasted a long time obviously, but a lot of top players haven’t gone for as long as Messi and Ronaldo and for that reason, you know, I think they are the top two."Yet when pressed to choose, Smith’s answer was clear."I’d probably just go for Messi. Well, he’s a world champion obviously, but maybe he thinks about the team a little more than Ronaldo does at times. Hasn’t quite got that ego, obviously has got an ego, but yeah, he’s just such an amazing player to watch. But they are both fantastic."It is a narrow margin in Smith’s eyes. Not a dismissal of Ronaldo, but a recognition of how Messi makes football feel shared, not just conquered.
