New Delhi: Meta has recently released a privacy safeguard for its smart glasses, which prevents users from secretly recording by blocking or damaging the recording indicator light. This move comes after reports previously stated that several people were modifying the glasses to turn off the white recording light while keeping the camera functional.
On Meta’s second-generation smart glasses, the camera will now be automatically turned off if the system detects that the capture LED has been blocked, covered, or tampered with. Users won’t be able to take photos or record videos until the LED is uncovered or repaired.
This upgrade addresses growing privacy concerns after modders discovered ways to turn off the recording light. Several services even offered hardware modifications that enable people to record without anyone nearby knowing the camera was active. White LED is specially designed to notify bystanders whenever the camera is recording, making it a key privacy feature. Meta also stated it is disabling the LED that undermines that safeguard.
Remove the listings advertising LED tampering services from its platforms. It will also take legal action against the businesses that modify or promote modifications to the glasses. It continues enforcing measures against unauthorized hardware alterations. This upgrade comes amid increasing scrutiny of AI-powered smart glasses.
Meta’s strongest anti-tampering measures for its wearable devices. Instead of simply warning the users, the company is now using the software to enforce the privacy indicator by ensuring the camera cannot operate if the recording LED is compromised. This change is intended to increase public trust as smart glasses are going to become more mainstream.
