The Mishra Dhatu Nigam Limited (MIDHANI) has taken up the challenge of indigenously developing and certifying critical superalloys, titanium alloys, and special steels for advanced aero engines of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Koraput.

So far, MIDHANI has completed material-level development for 50% of the total alloy systems, of which 80% have been certified, while the remaining are at an advanced stage of development.

Centre for Military Airworthiness and Certification (CEMILAC) Chief Executive A.P.V.S. Prasad handed over a certificate to MIDHANI Chairman and Managing Director SVS Narayana Murty to mark the occasion. This certificate grants clearance for series production of these alloys, which are suitable for manufacturing airworthy components for aero engines, said an official release on Tuesday.

MIDHANI has successfully developed and produced mill forms and forgings of various nickel-based superalloys, titanium alloys, and special steels. These materials are used in the fabrication of performance-critical components of aero engines.

The firm has significantly augmented its production capabilities, including new titanium shop to increase airworthy titanium alloy production capacity, a 6000T near-isothermal forge press and a revamped Vacuum Induction Melting (VIM) furnaces, enabling large-scale production of remelt stock and master heats of single-crystal superalloys.

CEMILAC’s Chief Executive appreciated MIDHANI’s fast-track approach to indigenisation and certification and urged the organisation to continue accelerating material testing to meet deadlines and ensure the fleet remains operational with indigenously developed materials.

Also present at the event was Regional Director Akhilesh Pathak.
