Pep Guardiola will reach 1,000 games as a coach when he leads Manchester City in one of the top-billed fixtures in world football against Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday.
Guardiola debuted as a boss on September 2, 2007 for Barcelona ‘B’ in a Spanish fourth-tier match against Premia, and is set to manage his 1000th game eighteen years later against Liverpool.
“I never thought for one second about reaching 1,000 games," the 54-year-old said.
“You just want to do a good job, play football the right way and see what happens," Guardiola added.
From his first role with Barcelona ‘B’ to trophy-filled stints with Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and City, here’s a numerical look at Guardiola’s extraordinary coaching career that has revolutionised football.
Guardiola, who began his stint at the helm with Barcelona ‘B’ went on to manage the senior Blaugrana in a relationship that revolutionised modern football, before moving to Bavaria with Bayern Munich as he made them a certified European powerhouse. He opted to take up the City role in 2016 following a year’s sabbatical after his Bavarian job.
Guardiola boasts a win rate of 71.57 per cent in his 999 games thus far at the helm and averages a trophy every 25 games. He is also PL side Man City’s longest serving manager of all-time in a silverware-laden tenure.
Guardiola has a record of smashing 9 goals past his opposition twice in his illustrious career, first with Barcelona in a 9-0 thrashing of L’Hospitalet in the Copa del Rey in December 2011, and then with Manchester City in a 9-0 victory over Burton Albion in the English League Cup in January 2019.
Guardiola is also only behind legendary Italian Carlo Ancelotti in terms of UEFA Champions League titles, as the Catalan boss has managed to lift the elite European crown thrice, in 2009,2011 and 2023, while Don Carlo has done it five times.
