Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development Minister J. Chinchurani inaugurated the Mulakulam North Veterinary Dispensary building in Piravom municipality on Tuesday.
She said in her inaugural address that Kerala was second only to Punjab in milk production. The growth in productivity is possible because 95 per cent of the cows in the State are cross-bred, according to a release.
She said that various projects had been implemented to increase milk production and improve the quality of feed. The government aimed to bring modern changes in the dairy development sector as part of the Vision 2031 project in the field of animal husbandry, she added.
She handed over a cheque of ₹6.09 lakh to pig farm owner Liji Antony as compensation for the loss he suffered on account of African swine fever.
Monu Varghese Maman, who received the State government’s best young farmer award, was honoured at the meeting.
District Animal Welfare Officer G. Saji Kumar, Piravom Municipality chairperson Julie Sabu, and vice chairperson K. P. Salim were among those who spoke.
