Back in September, when the Minnesota Vikings' backup quarterback, Carson Wentz, filled in for an injured J.J. McCarthy, little did he know he would create NFL history. The 32-year-old quarterback was set to become the first NFL player to start six games in six consecutive seasons.
However, his story was cut short when it was announced that he would undergo season-ending surgery. NFL Insider Adam Schefter informed cyberspace that Wentz had been playing through a painful shoulder injury. ESPN’s Kevin Seifert further specified that the injury sustained during the Vikings vs. Browns matchup in London on October 5 included a torn labrum and fractured socket. The Vikings, with Wentz as their starter, went 2-3 before he was sidelined.
Carson Wentz filled in for J.J. McCarthy and now McCarthy will fill in for Wentz?
Tom Christ, a Doctor of Physical Therapy and founder of Fantasy Injury Team, discussed J.J. McCarthy’s ankle sprain with Ryan Morik of FOX News. Christ said, “The time frame of 2-4 weeks is pretty consistent with a Grade II high-ankle sprain, where there is some tissue laxity or instability in the ankle. That should be able to get under control. But what can happen there, with it being his right ankle, is that it can be just a little less firm when he pushes off to throw the ball.
We'll see how long he’s actually out for. I believe they have a bye week somewhere in there (Week 6), so a lot of people are speculating he may not return after that, which, if that’s the case, he should be fine by that point.” Now, with Week 8 over and Carson Wentz assigned to the injured reserve, J.J. McCarthy is expected to return to the starting lineup for the Vikings' upcoming Week 9 matchup against the Detroit Lions.

ESPN’s Kevin Seifert reported that Carson Wentz protected J.J. McCarthy and Max Brosmer as long as he could, and that it was time to find out whether either of them could play. McCarthy is expected to start Sunday against the Detroit Lions, while Brosmer, who was signed in May as an undrafted rookie, will serve as his backup. The Vikings may sign a third quarterback to add depth to the roster as they have 10 more games left in the season.
If McCarthy cannot stay healthy, Brosmer may get the next look. Also Read: “It sounds crazy”: Minnesota Vikings quarterback Carson Wentz creates NFL history by starting six teams in six consecutive seasons
