Minor run over by BMTC bus; a man killed in a seprate incident

A 12-year-old boy was crushed to death and his uncle was injured after a speeding BMTC bus ran over him on S.J.P Road in Halasuru Gate police station limits on Sunday evening.

The deceased has been identified as Shabarish, 12.

The police said that around 6.40 p.m., Shabarish was riding pillion with his uncle on a two-wheeler when a BMTC bus heading towards Town Hall from Market Road on S.J.P. Road hit the two-wheeler. Shabarish fell, and the rear wheel of the bus ran over him, killing him on the spot, while his uncle sustained minor injuries, said the police.

The jurisdictional Halasuru Gate Traffic Police have registered a case and seized the bus.

This is the fifth fatal accident involving BMTC buses reported in the last one week .

The BMTC, taking cognisance of the series of accidents, intensified its road safety initiatives , including mandatory training for its 9,000 drivers and those from private electric bus operators, conducted in batches at BMTC zonal offices and Vaddarahalli’s training center.

 The training focuses on preventing accidents, adherence to traffic rules, stress management, and uses dashcam footage to teach drivers how to avoid dangerous situations. Additionally, BMTC has revised bus schedules to reduce driver fatigue, suspended drivers involved in fatal accidents, and implemented stricter disciplinary actions for negligence.

Another incident

In a separate accident, a 22-year-old security guard from Bihar was killed and a bike taxi rider was injured after a speeding truck hit the rear of their two-wheeler. The incident occurred near Krishnananda Nagar Junction in Rajarajeshwari Nagar Traffic Police Station limits on Sunday.

The police said Sanjiv Kumar, a resident of Peenya, had finished his work and booked a bike taxi to return home. Around 2 a.m., near Krishnananda Nagar Junction, a speeding truck rammed into the scooter. Kumar lost control fell on the road and was run over by a truck. The bike taxi rider sustained injuries to his legs.

The Rajarajeshwari Nagar Traffic Police have registered a case and are analysing CCTV footage to trace the accused.
