Indian-American filmmaker Mira Nair shared Bollywood director Zoya Akhtar’s congratulatory message for her son Zohran Mamdani after his historic victory in the New York City mayoral election. Mira Nair reposted Zoya Akhtar’s Instagram story that read, “Zohran you beauty," accompanied by heart and fireworks emojis. Zoya Akhtar added, “Zohran Mamdani has officially won the NYC mayoral race at 34 years old."

The celebration came just hours after New Yorkers elected the young leftist lawmaker as their next mayor, marking a major win for the progressive wing of the Democratic Party. Zohran Mamdani defeated independent Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa in one of the city’s most closely watched races.

Born in Uganda, Zohran Mamdani is the son of acclaimed historian Mahmood Mamdani and celebrated filmmaker Mira Nair, known for directing “Salaam Bombay!" and “Monsoon Wedding."

Addressing a roaring crowd at his victory party in Brooklyn, Zohran Mamdani said, “The conventional wisdom would tell you that I am far from the perfect candidate. I am young, I am Muslim, I am a democratic socialist and most damning of all, I refuse to apologize for any of this."

He framed his win as a mandate for the city’s working people, asserting, “New York, tonight you have delivered a mandate for change. I will wake up each morning with a singular purpose- to make this city better for you than it was the day before."

He also paid tribute to his parents and his wife as he said, “You have made me into the man I am today. I am so proud to be your son." Addressing his parents, he said their values had shaped his commitment to justice and empathy.
