US Congressman Thomas Suozzi wrote a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, expressing concerns over the recent attacks on Hindu minorities in conflict-torn Bangladesh and the misuse of blasphemy laws.

“Recent reports about the murder of Hindu minorities in Bangladesh raise serious concerns about the misuse of blasphemy laws. Please make the appropriate officials available to brief me regarding the safety of religious minorities, so that I may report back to my Bangladeshi-American constituents and address their concerns," Suozzi wrote in his letter.

Suozzi’s letter came amid mounting concerns over the safety of religious minorities in Bangladesh after Dipu Chandra Das, a 25-year-old garment factory worker, was lynched by a mob and his body set on fire over blasphemy in Baluka in Mymensingh, Bangladesh.

Widespread unrest broke out in Bangladesh after the death of youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi earlier this month. His killing sparked widespread protests that spiralled into arson and vandalism targeting major media outlets and cultural institutions.

Amid the violence, Das was violently dragged in the streets and beaten to death over allegations of blasphemy. Investigations revealed he had not committed any blasphemous actions. Moreover, Gobinda Biswas, a Hindu rickshaw puller, was assaulted by a mob in Jhenaidah district of Khulna Division on Friday, for wearing a red sacred thread on his wrist, a symbol commonly worn by Hindus.

The Office of the Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus expressed profound sorrow over the recent killing of factory worker Dipu Chandra Das in Mymensingh and extends its deepest condolences to his family, even as protests erupted near the Bangladesh High Commission in India over attacks on Hindus.

Bangladesh’s foreign ministry summoned Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma to express “grave concern" over previous protests outside its visa centres. Hours later, India, too, summoned Bangladesh High Commissioner Riaz Hamidullah for the second time in a week.
