Aizawl: In a significant development in Mizoram's ongoing efforts to combat cross-border narcotics smuggling, police have apprehended another suspected transnational drug kingpin linked to the state's largest-ever heroin seizure.
The arrest took place in New Delhi, according to a statement released by Mizoram Police on Friday. The suspect, identified as Joseph Lianthangpuia, 42, from Chanakya Place, New Delhi, was detained on the night of Nov 5. His arrest is connected to the Saitual Police Station Case No. 63/2025, which involves charges under the Narcotic Drugs & Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, and the Foreigners Act, 1946.This case is related to the seizure of 15 kg of heroin from a vehicle in August, marking the largest drug haul in Mizoram Police history.
The contraband was discovered on Aug 23 in a vehicle driven by Lalliancheua, 20, from Falam, Chin state in Myanmar, revealing a sophisticated drug trafficking network operating across the India–Myanmar border. The arrest of Joseph Lianthangpuia is seen as a major advancement in the investigation. Both he and another suspected kingpin will be transported to Mizoram by a Champhai Police team for further interrogation and legal proceedings after completing legal formalities in New Delhi.
This arrest follows another significant operation earlier this week, where Lalchhuanthangi, 50, a suspected drug kingpin from Aizawl residing in New Delhi, was captured in connection with a separate case involving 7.422 kg of heroin seized near Zokhawthar in July.Mizoram Police have expressed their gratitude to the Delhi Police and the Special Bureau for their crucial cooperation in executing these arrests, assisting in court procedures, and facilitating airport transit.IGP (Hqrs) and state police chief PRO H Ramthlengliana said the latest arrest highlights Mizoram Police’s commitment to dismantling transnational drug trafficking syndicates and disrupting supply chains operating through the Indo–Myanmar corridor.
