Mizoram to transform 60% land vacated by AR into green spaces

Aizawl: Over 60% of the vacated Assam Rifles land in the heart of Aizawl will be transformed into green spaces in a move towards sustainable urban development. This decision comes as part of a revised Master Plan approved by the state’s Advisory Committee on Assam Rifles land during its third meeting at the CM’s conference hall on Thursday. The committee reviewed various proposals for the utilization of this prime land, which occupies a substantial portion of Aizawl's central area. The plan designates 39.33% of the land for public assets, earmarked for development into built-up areas, while the remaining 60.67% will be preserved as green space. The committee agreed that this approach strikes a balance between urban development and environmental preservation. The initiative aims to protect the environment amid Aizawl’s urbanisation, which has led to concerns about the city becoming a “concrete jungle.” Environmental activists have long regarded the forested areas of the former Assam Rifles land as the “lungs of Aizawl,” crucial for maintaining the city’s ecological balance.Key infrastructure projects discussed include the construction of Aizawl Square, a ring road, an eastern bypass road, a 2,000-capacity convention center, and a large parking lot.
