MUMBAI: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) will construct seven foot over bridges (FOBs) along the 11-km Metro Line 9 corridor between Dahisar East and Mira-Bhayandar to improve pedestrian safety and provide seamless access to metro stations. The FOBs, to be built under MMRDA’s Multi-Modal Integration (MMI) initiative, will come up at Dahisar Toll Naka and Miragaon on the Western Express Highway, and at Kashigaon, Shivar Garden, Maxus Mall, Veg Sagar Hotel and Sai Baba Nagar on the Mira-Bhayandar Road.Officials said the grade-separated crossings are aimed at addressing pedestrian movement challenges along the two busy arterial roads, where heavy traffic and wide carriageways make road crossings difficult and unsafe. The bridges, ranging from 80 metres to 145 metres in length, will be equipped with lifts, staircases and CCTV surveillance systems. All FOBs will have a standard width of three metres.MMRDA has awarded the Rs 82.09crore contract for the project to a joint venture of Speco Infrastructure and PRS Infraprojects LLP.According to MMRDA, the FOBs will improve access to Metro Line 9 stations, facilitate smoother commuter movement, support passenger dispersal during peak hours and strengthen last-mile connectivity.
The authority expects the facilities to encourage greater metro ridership while reducing dependence on signalised road crossings and improving traffic flow.Metro Line 9, an extension of Metro Line 7, connects Dahisar East with Mira-Bhayandar. Phase I of the corridor was commissioned on April 7 this year, while the remaining works are nearing completion. Officials said the FOBs are being planned to ensure safe pedestrian access from the first day of full-scale metro operations.MMRDA commissioner Sanjay Mukherjee said the project is aimed at improving station accessibility and creating a safer, more convenient travel experience for commuters.
