Mob attacks police team in Jamui, injures four cops

Patna: Four police personnel, including two sub-inspectors, a constable, and a chowkidar, were injured in a violent mob attack at Kaddua Tari village under the Barhat police station area in Jamui district on Friday.

The police team had gone to the area to take action against liquor mafia following a tip-off about illegal liquor distillation allegedly being run by some people of the tribal community.The incident came to light after a video of the attack surfaced on social media on Saturday. In the footage, villagers can be seen protesting the police action. The situation quickly escalated into violence as protesters armed with sticks assaulted the officers and even attempted to snatch their weapons.The video shows sub-inspector Urmila Kumari crying as the mob turned aggressive. Another clip shows SI Shubham Jha being chased for nearly 200 meters by villagers before being caught. He is seen pleading for mercy with folded hands while being beaten and pushed by the crowd.Barhat SHO Kumar Sanjeev confirmed that 13 people, including six women, have been arrested and sent to jail. “A case has been registered against 20 named and 25 unidentified people under the BNS Act and the Prohibition Act for assaulting police personnel and obstructing official duties,” he said.

“We are scanning CCTV footages and online videos to identify others involved. Raids are going on to nab the remaining accused.

The SHO added that around 50 villagers, both men and women, had surrounded the police team during the incident. “Four of our personnel were injured and have been hospitalised. Although no liquor was seized during the raid, we have video evidence confirming its presence,” he said, assuring strict action against all those involved.
