Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge launched a tirade against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and said that the BJP and RSS were trying to change the Constitution.
He was speaking at the ‘Sadhana Samavesha’ held here on Saturday, where development works and projects worth over ₹2,578 crore were launched.
Mr. Kharge cautioned the gathering to remain vigilant, and warned that there was threat to the Constitution provided by B.R. Ambedkar, as the BJP was trying to dilute or change it.
“The people of this country will not allow the Constitution to be changed. It is the same Constitution which helped Modi become the Chief Minister of Gujarat, and later the Prime Minister of the country. But now, the same Modi was trying to murder the Constitution,” the Congress president said.
He warned the gathering that if the Constitution was changed, then people would be divested of their voting rights. ‘’There are serious attempts by the BJP and the RSS to make amendments or change the Constitution, and the Congress will not allow the BJP to succeed in its attempts,” Mr. Kharge added.
‘Modi’s unfulfilled promises’
The Congress president ridiculed Mr. Modi for “failing” to keep his promises made to the people. ‘’He spoke of crediting every individual with ₹15 lakh, generating 2 crore jobs per year, doubling farmers’ income etc., but has failed on each of these,” Mr. Kharge said.
“No development has taken place on the ground and the only guarantee of Mr. Modi is to utter lies to hoodwink and betray the people,” alleged Mr. Kharge.
Commenting on the disparity in growth and wealth accumulation, Mr. Kharge said that the policies of the Modi government benefit either Adani or the Ambani groups. Only 1% of the country’s population controls 40% of the nation’s wealth, while the bottom 50% of the population have only 6.4% of the wealth, he added, underlining the growing economic disparity under the current Central government.
Mr. Kharge also pointed out that senior BJP leader Nitin Gadkari recently stated that the number of poor people in the country was increasing while the wealth is being concentrated in the hands of a few rich people. This contradicts Mr. Modi’s claim that “India is among the top countries where income equality is the highest,” said Mr. Kharge.
The Prime Minister was also faulted for not visiting the troubled State of Manipur. “He has time to travel abroad; he has visted 42 countries, while a few more trips are in the offing. But he has no time to visit Manipur, talk to the people, and offer them solace,” said Mr. Kharge.
