Mohamed Salah has admitted he is “frightened" to return to Liverpool following the tragic death of teammate Diogo Jota, whose fatal car crash has shaken the football world and devastated the Premier League champions.

Jota, 27, and his younger brother André Silva were killed in the early hours of Thursday when their vehicle veered off a motorway in Spain and burst into flames. The accident claimed both brothers’ lives instantly, sending shockwaves through the footballing community.

On Friday, mourners gathered in Portugal for a wake ahead of Saturday’s funeral. The emotional scenes reflect the profound impact of the loss, both in Portugal and in Liverpool.

Liverpool players and staff have struggled to come to terms with Jota’s sudden passing. Captain Virgil van Dijk expressed his heartbreak on Instagram, writing he was “absolutely devastated and in total disbelief."

Salah Pays Emotional Tribute

Egyptian star Mohamed Salah shared a deeply personal tribute to Jota, revealing the emotional toll the tragedy has taken on him.

I am truly lost for words. Until yesterday, I never thought there would be something that would frighten me of going back to Liverpool after the break. Team mates come and go but not like this. “I am truly lost for words," Salah posted on Instagram. “Until yesterday, I never thought there would be something that would frighten me about going back to Liverpool after the break.

“Teammates come and go, but not like this. It’s going to be extremely difficult to accept that Diogo won’t be there when we go back.

“My thoughts are with his wife, his children, and of course his parents who suddenly lost their children. Those close to Diogo and his brother Andre need all the support they can get. They will never be forgotten."

Jota had recently married his longtime partner, Rute Cardoso, on June 22. Just hours before the crash, he posted a video of their wedding on Instagram. The couple had three children together.

Liverpool Delays Return to Training

Players were due to report to the club’s training complex on Friday for pre-season fitness testing, but in light of the tragedy, their return has been postponed to Monday.

Liverpool is scheduled to play its first pre-season match against Preston on July 13.
