The southwest monsoon is tightening its grip across India. Mumbai is wading through waterlogged streets under an orange alert, Delhi has finally shaken off its heatwave after a dramatic duststorm, Kolkata is nursing storm damage, Bengaluru is seeing patchy showers, and Kerala is bracing for heavier rain through the week. Here is the weather picture across the country today.

Mumbai: Orange Alert, Buses Diverted, Trains Suspended

Mumbai’s monsoon arrived with full force, bringing disruption along with the downpour. After a brief red alert, the India Meteorological Department has downgraded the warning to orange for Mumbai, Thane and Raigad, with moderate to heavy rain, lightning and thunder forecast through the day.

Several BEST bus routes stand diverted due to severe waterlogging across the city; commuters should verify their route before stepping out. The Trans Harbour Rail Link remains suspended and at least one underpass has been shut. IMD’s 0800 hrs forecast: generally cloudy skies with moderate to heavy rain, lightning and thunder in the city and suburbs.

Delhi: Duststorm Breaks The Heat, Seven-Degree Temperature Drop

Delhi’s weeks-long heatwave came to an abrupt end on Tuesday afternoon as a powerful duststorm swept through the capital, bringing dark skies, reduced visibility and wind speeds exceeding 50 kmph before heavy rain followed.

The relief was sharp and immediate. At Safdarjung, temperatures fell from around 40°C to 33°C. Ayanagar recorded the steepest drop — nearly 15 degrees, from 40.6°C to 25.7°C.

IMD had briefly issued a red alert during the peak of the storm. Forecasters expect intermittent thunderstorms and light rain through the rest of the week as monsoon activity strengthens, with maximum temperatures likely settling between 38°C and 40°C.

Heavy rain accompanied by winds of up to 60 kmph disrupted life across Kolkata and parts of South Bengal, uprooting trees, causing waterlogging and triggering major traffic jams, particularly at Dharmatala, where a fallen tree blocked Central Avenue.

IMD issued an orange alert for the city on Tuesday. North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly, East Midnapore and West Midnapore were among the worst-affected districts. Authorities warned that lightning could damage kutcha houses and standing crops, and urged residents to remain indoors unless absolutely necessary.
