The India Meteorological Department (IMD), on Wednesday (October 22, 2025) has issued a red alert for three districts in Kerala: Malappuram, Palakkad and Idukki. In Tamil Nadu, a red alert has been issued for Cuddalore, Villupuram, Mayiladuthurai, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Pudukkottai and Ramanathapuram districts, and the Puducherry and Karaikal regions.

Malappuram, Palakkad and Idukki district administrations have declared a holiday for educational institutions in their respective districts.

All educational institutions have been declared shut in: Puducherry and Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Mayiladuthurai, Kallakurichi, Kancheepuram districts of Tamil Nadu.

In Chennai, Salem, Perambalur, Namakkal, Pudukkottai and Tiruchirapalli districts, schools alone have been shut as a precautionary measure.

School and colleges closed in Tamil Nadu

All schools, colleges and educational institutions have been closed in Puducherry and Karaikal regions and Cuddalore, Villupuram, Mayiladuthurai, Kallakurichi, Kancheepuram districts of Tamil Nadu.

Salem, Perambalur, Namakkal, Pudukkottai, Tiruchirapalli and Tiruppur districts have announced a leave only for schools.

    A well-marked low pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal that formed in the early hours of Tuesday is likely to trigger widespread, intense rain, especially along coastal Tamil Nadu, this week as it gathers strength.

    The Regional Meteorological Centre has sounded a red alert for four districts — Villupuram, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, and Mayiladuthurai — indicating extremely heavy rainfall above 21 cm on Wednesday. It has issued orange and yellow alerts for various parts of the State till October 24, as weather systems over the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea continue to feed moisture into the region.
