The southwest monsoon which slipped into a lull phase after an intense opening spell in the last week of May is set to revive over Kerala this week with the expected strengthening of westerlies over the Arabian Sea.

A cyclonic circulation is likely over the West-Central Bay of Bengal by Wednesday, off the Andhra Pradesh coast, and another cyclonic circulation is likely to come up over the North Bay of Bengal by this weekend. These two systems are expected to strengthen the flow of wind over Kerala and Lakshadweep, reviving the monsoon that remained subdued for over a week after a robust onset.

According to a weather bulletin issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), strong westerlies or north-westerlies are likely to prevail over the Kerala and Lakshadweep area in the lower tropospheric levels from June 12.

This is likely to trigger a fresh wave of monsoon rains over the State. A yellow alert has been issued for Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam and Thrissur on Tuesday, warning of isolated heavy rain. This would be followed by another round of vigorous spells in the coming days. An orange alert has been issued for various districts in Kerala, warning of very heavy rain, on June 12 and 13.
