Montha cyclone: Srikakulam district suffers ₹1.24 crore loss

Srikakulam district, Andhra Pradesh, witnessed ₹1.24 crore loss owing to the impact of cyclonic storm Montha as per the initial reports of the government. The crop got damaged in 2,230 hectares and 44 houses were collapsed in sea coast areas of Ichchapuram, Mandasa, Sompeta and other mandals of the district. There was a significant damage to electricity networks, roads and other structures.

The cyclone had impacted losses in 53 villages of 7 mandals of the district. Fortunately, there were no human casualties with the shifting of people from in low lying areas to relief camps established in 30 places.. The government established 30 medical camps to prevent spread of waterborne diseases and fevers among the people.

Srikakulam Collector in-charge Farman Ahmed Khan toured Ichchapuram and other cyclone affected mandals and assured the people that the district administration was taking adequate measures to restore normalcy in remote villages which were affected due to waterlogging and damage to roads. According to him, there is no threat of floods with the moderate inflows to reservoirs and barrages constructed on Nagavali, Vamsadhara, Mahendra Tanaya and others.

The locals of Birlangi, Jagannathapuram and other villages narrated their woes to the Collector and sought relief for the compensation for the crop damage. CPI-M Srikakulam district secretary D. Govinda Rao urged the government to announce compensation to the farmers who had lost their investment on crops, cashew and coconut groves.
