Bayer Leverkusen squandered a two-goal advantage to draw 3-3 at 10-man Werder Bremen on Saturday, denying Erik ten Hag his first league victory as their new coach.
Leverkusen led 3-1 and had an extra player after Patrik Schick’s Panenka penalty midway through the second half, following Niklas Stark’s second yellow card for the foul that led to the spot-kick.
However, Leverkusen allowed Bremen back into the match when goalkeeper Mark Flekken misjudged a long ball after venturing out of his area, giving Isaac Schmidt an easy finish.
Bremen continued their offensive efforts and equalised in the fourth minute of stoppage time, with Karim Coulibaly volleying in after the ball rebounded off the crossbar.
Coulibaly, at 18, is now Bremen’s youngest ever goalscorer in the Bundesliga.
Leverkusen initially went 2-0 up in the first half with Schick netting a fifth-minute opener and debutant Malik Tillman scoring in the 35th minute.
Bremen were awarded a controversial penalty, converted by Romano Schmidt just before half-time, setting the stage for the second-half drama.
The result adds early pressure on Ten Hag, who is working to integrate a team of new recruits while trying to revive his own reputation following a disappointing end to his Manchester United tenure.
“There were too many simple mistakes from us… we did dumb things and gave the game away," Tillman told DAZN.
Despite the setback, the draw extended Leverkusen’s impressive unbeaten away run in the league since May 2023.
“It is hard to accept. We have to improve very quickly. Obviously, this is not a good situation," Schick said.

Elsewhere, new Eintracht Frankfurt winger Ritsu Doan scored twice and assisted once in their 3-1 win at Hoffenheim.
Japan international Doan, who joined from Freiburg in the summer, scored Frankfurt’s opener in the 17th minute with a superb curling shot from outside the box.
Doan added a second 10 minutes later, tapping in a Jean-Matteo Bahoya pass on the break, before providing an excellent assist for Can Uzun to score Frankfurt’s third goal.
Stuttgart secured a 1-0 home victory against Borussia Moenchengladbach with a late header from Chema Andres, just hours after striker Nick Woltemade’s move to Newcastle was confirmed.
The German Cup holders were sluggish but claimed the three points when Andres headed in after 79 minutes due to poor marking by the Gladbach defence.
RB Leipzig bounced back from last week’s 6-0 defeat to Bayern Munich, winning 2-0 at home against Heidenheim thanks to goals from Christoph Baumgartner and new striker Romulo Cardoso.
In Saturday’s late match, defending champions Bayern play at Bavarian neighbours Augsburg.
