Morgan Fairchild has appeared in dozens of television series across her career, but one particular line from a guest role on Friends remains her favorite. The Emmy-nominated actress, now 75, played Nora Bing, Chandler Bing’s mother, in five episodes of the long-running sitcom and quickly left her mark with audiences. In “The One with Monica and Chandler’s Wedding: Part 1,” Nora Bing faces off with her ex-husband, a transgender woman portrayed by Kathleen Turner. Fairchild described the moment as one of her most enjoyable experiences on the show, which she joined during its early seasons while it was still finding its audience. The former Falcon Crest star first appeared on Friends in 1995. Over time, the series rose to the top of television ratings and became a cultural fixture.
“It was always fun working over there. You know, they always gave us great scripts,” Fairchild said. “As you know, a lot of times when you’re the guest star, they don’t give you the good lines. They always give the star the good lines.”By then, Fairchild was already well known for roles in Happy Days, Mork & Mindy, and a range of daytime dramas. Taking on Nora Bing gave her an opportunity to connect with a younger audience.
Reflecting on the casting, Fairchild recalled a conversation with Cicely Tyson, who advised against the role. “I remember Cicely Tyson saying to me, ‘You’re too young to be that guy’s mother. You know, you should turn that down,’” she said. Fairchild was 44 at the time. Her first day on set included meeting her television son, Matthew Perry, setting the stage for one of her most remembered television performances.
