KOLKATA: In yet another instance of snatchers targeting morning walkers, a 56-year-old man residing in the eastern suburbs of the city was targeted by a group of three individuals on a motorcycle who snatched his gold necklace while he was out for his routine morning walk.
This was the fourth snatching incident in under two weeks, two of which were already solved with quick arrests.The incident was reported between 6:20 and 6:25 am on September 5 near VIP Market on CIT Road, Kankurgachi, Scheme VI M, under the jurisdiction of Phoolbagan Police Station.According to the police, the victim, Bibin Kumar Mohata, was on his routine morning walk when the assailants struck. According to Mohata, the unknown motorcyclist, accompanied by two pillion riders, approached him swiftly and snatched the gold necklace weighing approximately 30 grams from his neck.
The trio then sped away on their motorcycle, leaving Mohata in shock and unable to pursue them.
Mohata, who resides at Parvati Residency on Maniktala Main Road, immediately reported the incident to the Phoolbagan Police Station. He has urged the authorities to take swift legal action to recover his stolen property and bring the culprits to justice.The police registered a case and initiated an investigation into the incident.
They are currently reviewing CCTV footage from the area to identify the suspects and gather more evidence. The authorities have also increased patrolling in the vicinity to prevent further incidents and ensure the safety of residents.This incident has raised concerns among the local community about the increasing number of snatching cases in the area. Residents have expressed their worries over the safety of pedestrians, especially during early morning and late evening hours, and have asked for some police cover just like in the Maidan area.The police have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities immediately. They have also advised individuals to set up CCTV cameras individually, even in bylanes, as that helps nab the accused and also create deterrence.As the investigation continues, the police are hopeful of making a breakthrough soon based on CCTV leads. Meanwhile, the community awaits justice for Mohata and a resolution to the growing issue of street crimes in the city.
