MP Woman 'Harassed' For High-Yield Buffalo As Dowry, Dies After Consuming Acid

Harassed daily by in-laws, who continuously demanded a buffalo as dowry, a 21-year-old woman allegedly killed herself by consuming acid in Gwalior district of Madhya Pradesh.

According to police, the woman was unable to bear the harassment she faced over her in-laws’ demand for a ‘Murrah’ buffalo – a high-yield breed valued around Rs 2 lakh in the market.

The woman’s husband and four family members have been booked on charges of dowry harassment and abetment to suicide. The police identified the woman as Vimlesh Baghel, who married Dinesh Baghel of Madhoganj on January 31, 2024.  

The police said soon after the wedding, Dinesh’s family started to pressure her to bring a ‘Murrah’ buffalo for their dairy business. Vimlesh’s family told the police that she faced constant physical and mental abuse. 

“They beat her almost every day, demanding the Murrah buffalo from my herd. She often called me in tears but refused to file a complaint," a family member told police, as reported by Times of India.

This harassment, however, took a violent turn on September 20 and the following day, Vimlesh consumed acid, the police said. She was taken to the hospital, where she died during treatment, they said.

But it took the police almost a month to register a case based on an FIR on October 17. Dinesh Baghel, father-in-law Imrat Baghel, mother-in-law Vidya Bai, brother-in-law Harisingh, and sister-in-law Bhavana Baghel have been booked but all are on the run.

“The repeated demand drove the victim to suicide. A case has been registered, and arrests will be made soon," a police officer was quoted.
