India’s GM Lalit Babu took the Mumbai International Grandmaster Chess tournament title after edging out Armenian Mamikon Gharibyan on a higher tie-break score on Wednesday.

Babu got the better of top-seeded Georgian GM Lavin Pantsulaia to accumulate eight points out of nine games, but had to endure nervy moments as Gharibyan also notched up eight points with a win over Indian GM Neeloptal Das. However, Babu’s higher tie-break score of 54.5 as compared to Gharibyan’s 54 helped the Indian pip out the Armenian to the crown as the 32-year-old bagged the trophy and the purse.

Babu pocketed Rs 4 Lakh for the win, while second-placed Gharibyan picked up Rs 3 lakh. Deepan Chakravarthy, another Indian, who came in fifth in the category was awarded Rs 1.25 Lakh.

India’s Candidate Master Madhesh Kumar emerged champion in the juniors category with a last-round win over Vyom Malhotra to tally eight points in all. The teen prodigy Madhesh earned Rs 2 lakh for his feat. Advik Agrawal came in second to pocket Rs 1.5 lakhs, while the top seed Aansh Nerurkar completed the podium with a third place finis that earned him Rs 1 lakh.

The fourth and fifth places were secured by CM Madhvendra Pratap Sharma, who collected Rs 75,000 and Jagreet Mishra, who was rewarded with Rs 50,000.

Sannidhi Bhat was named the Best Female Player and was presented with Rs 45,000 and a trophy to mark her accomplishment, while Rachit Gurnani and Mysha Perwez emerged the best among the Mumbai boys and girls, netting Rs 30,000 each.
