Mumbai continues to reel under inclement weather as intermittent rains have thrown normal life out of year. On Monday, the city woke up to a rainy morning coupled with dark clouds.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the coastal observatory in Colaba registered 135 mm of rainfall till 8.30 am while the Santacruz observatory logged 33 mm on Monday.

As per IMD data, the Colaba observatory has now logged the highest rainfall during the month of May at 295 mm, breaking the earlier record of 279.4 mm reported in May 1918.

Meanwhile, the Santacruz station registered 197.8 mm of rainfall so far this month, with the highest recorded in this month so far being 387.8 mm reported in 2000.

On Monday morning, the weather department upgraded the existing ‘yellow’ alert for the city to an ‘orange’ alert forecasting heavy to very heavy rain accompanied with thunderstorm, lightning and winds gusting at a speed of 60 KMPH. The IMD said the orange alert will be in place till 8.30 am on May 27 (Tuesday).

Beside Mumbai, an orange alert has also been sounded at Thane and Raigad districts till Tuesday morning.

The nowcast warning from the weather bureau stated that heavy rainfall will continue to lash Mumbai throughout Monday, coupled with gusty winds blowing at 40 kmph.

“What we are witnessing right now is monsoon rainfall. The tip of Colaba in south Mumbai recorded extremely heavy rainfall during the morning, mainly due to the intense rainfall in the Raigad district area. Moderate to heavy spell of rainfall will continue throughout the day," The Indian Express quoted Sushma Nair, scientist at IMD, as saying.
