Mumbai woke up to a thick blanket of smog on Wednesday as air quality across several parts of the city dipped sharply, with multiple neighbourhoods recording “poor" levels and residents reporting reduced visibility and discomfort. A dense layer of haze gripped the skyline through the morning, renewing concerns about the city’s rising pollution levels.

According to real-time AQI data, Mumbai’s overall AQI stood at 171 (Moderate), but several pockets recorded far worse readings: Borivali (216), Chakala (260), Malad (258), Mazgaon (253), and Colaba (223) all fell in the ‘Poor’ category. Deonar (186) and Worli (150) remained in the ‘Moderate’ range, but still showed significant pollutant build-up.

The stagnant conditions were exacerbated by low nighttime wind speeds, which dropped to 1 kmph over the past three days.

Even as the pollution worsened, temperatures across the city have remained unusually steady for late November. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast clear skies for Mumbai and its suburbs, with maximum and minimum temperatures expected to hover around 33°C and 23°C. After a brief cool spell last week, the past few days have turned warmer and more humid, adding to the discomfort. Humidity in the island city touched 82% on Wednesday.

Ritika Sajdeh Reacts to Mumbai’s Hazardous AQI

The deteriorating air quality has also drawn reactions from public figures. Indian cricketer Rohit Sharma’s wife, Ritika Sajdeh, expressed her alarm over the worsening AQI levels, posting screenshots of air quality readings on her Instagram Stories on Tuesday.

One screenshot showed an AQI of 227, with PM2.5 at 152, categorised as “severe." Ritika added a mask emoji and a broken-heart emoji while sharing the reading. In another story, she posted an image of Mumbai covered in haze along with the caption “What is happening," reacting to an AQI of 257.

Her posts echoed the concerns of thousands of Mumbaikars as pollution levels continue to spike across the city.
