This initiative positions Mumbai among the first cities in India to integrate electric vehicle (EV) battery swapping infrastructure directly with its mass transit systems.

The first E:swap station is already operational at Dahisar East Metro Station.
In a landmark move towards sustainable urban mobility, the Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Ltd (MMMOCL) has partnered with Honda Power Pack Energy India Pvt Ltd, a subsidiary of Honda Motor Co Ltd, Japan, to roll out E:swap battery swapping stations across the city’s metro and monorail network. This initiative, launched just ahead of World Environment Day, positions Mumbai among the first cities in India to integrate electric vehicle (EV) battery swapping infrastructure directly with its mass transit systems.
As part of this collaboration, 31 stations – 25 on the Metro network and six on the Monorail corridor – will host Honda’s advanced E:swap battery swapping kiosks. These stations are strategically located along Metro Lines 2A and 7 and the Monorail line, ensuring seamless access for daily EV users. The E:swap platform allows electric two-wheeler and three-wheeler riders to replace a depleted Honda Mobile Power Pack e:battery with a fully charged one in under two minutes. The project, implemented under MMMOCL’s EV Policy approved in its 29th Board Meeting chaired by Dr Sanjay Mukherjee, IAS, aims to promote clean energy solutions and strengthen last-mile connectivity.
This pioneering initiative not only addresses the operational challenges of EV adoption – such as charging time and range anxiety – but also contributes to Maharashtra’s broader environmental goals. The battery swapping centres are expected to significantly benefit delivery agents, fleet operators, and urban commuters, while generating an estimated Rs 30 lakh in non-fare box revenue for MMMOCL. Adhering to stringent safety, technical, and environmental norms, the installations reflect a strong commitment to creating resilient and future-ready transport infrastructure.
The leadership of Maharashtra has lauded this initiative as a model of progressive governance and sustainable development. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis highlighted the government’s commitment to expanding EV infrastructure, while Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde emphasised that green infrastructure is essential for the future of the state. Dr Sanjay Mukherjee underlined the significance of this collaboration in building a low-emission urban ecosystem, and MMMOCL Managing Director Ms. Rubal Agrawal reaffirmed the organisation’s vision of integrating green technology into public transport systems. With the first E:swap station already operational at Dahisar East Metro Station, Mumbai is well on its way to becoming a national leader in eco-friendly, smart mobility.
