Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens, Mysuru, has announced the death of its male jaguar Vikram. The big cat, aged seven years and seven months, passed away on Friday around 9.00 a.m. due to liver and kidney failure.
Vikram had been under veterinary care for the past two days after showing signs of anorexia. Despite efforts by the zoo’s veterinary team and caretakers, the jaguar could not be saved.
Vikram was one of the major attractions of the Mysuru zoo. “His untimely demise is a profound loss to the zoo. The zoo administration, veterinary staff, and animal keepers deeply mourn his passing,” a press release from the zoo Executive Director said.
This is the second death at the zoo since last month. Padmavathi, the oldest elephant of the zoo, died at the age of 71 years and two months in August. Padmavathi, mother of three, had been under the zoo’s care for 53 years.
Considering her age, Padmavathi was shifted to the Chamundi Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre, Koorgalli, here four years ago, where she lived in a spacious natural setting away from visitors.
