The 60-member Nagaland Assembly will hold a special session on September 2 to discuss the impact of “Devil worship” on the youth in the State.
Speaker Sharingain Longkümer scheduled the session after considering a letter from Naga People’s Front MLA Küzholuzo Nienü, who requested a discussion on the issue in the Christian-majority State.
According to a notification from Khruohituonuo Rio, the Secretary in charge of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly Secretariat, the Speaker admitted Mr. Nienü’s “notice on matters of urgent public importance” under relevant rules. The notification said that the subject matter – prohibition of satanic worship in Nagaland – will be taken up in the Assembly after Question Hour on Tuesday (September 2, 2025).
Mr. Nienü’s letter to the Speaker on August 18 read, “…as a Christian State, we need to uphold our religion and be faithful believers and followers of God Almighty. It is truly shocking to see our younger generation embracing satanic/Devil worship openly in total disregard for our religion and the teachings of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.”
The MLA pointed out that the credo of ‘Nagaland for Christ’ made it imperative for public leaders to stand by the ideals and principles as laid down in the Bible. “Therefore, I urge your good office for a discussion and also for passing a resolution to enact laws prohibiting and preventing satanic/Devil worship within the territory of Nagaland,” he wrote.
‘Cults luring youth’
On Sunday (August 31, 2025), Mr. Nienü said that young Naga boys and girls were being lured by a certain group with the promise of ₹1 lakh or a two-wheeler to worship Satan. “These youngsters act very strangely after worshipping the Devil,” he said, insisting that their deviation from the Christian way of life has nothing to do with idol worship or other religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism.
Nagaland is not the only northeastern State in the country to be troubled by ‘Devil worship’ or ‘satanic cults’. Mizoram has been struggling to deal with at least 90 such cults that involve acts such as sacrificing chickens on church altars at night, grave-digging, séances, and polygamy.
