The district administration in association with the district Pollution Control Board (PCB) on Monday (August 25, 2025) distributed clay idols to people who visited the Collectorate for submitting petitions during the Public Grievance Redressal System (PGRS).
The administration decided to distributed 2,500 clay idols along with cloth bags free of cost to promote eco-friendly idols ahead of Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations. District Collector Rajakumari Gania offered puja before commencing the distribution of clay Ganesh idols at the Collectorate on Monday.
Ms. Gania said that they have decided to promote clay idols made of natural colours to protect the environment. People should desist from using idols made of Plaster of Paris, which will cause water and soil pollution, she said, adding, “immersing idols made of chemical colours, pollutes water bodies and the soil will lose its fertility.
She urged the people to celebrate the festival without polluting the rivers and ponds. Ms. Gania said that they are distributing the idols in cloth bags to dissuade people from using single use plastic. “The ban on single use plastic will come to force soon and any trader found using single use plastic will be fined ₹10,000 for first offence and the penalty will double for the next offence. The shop will be seized, if the offence is repeated for the third time,” she said.
She asked municipal commissioners and panchayat secretaries to inform every trader about the ban and penalties and also put notice boards in front of the shops.
