Napoli’s 3–1 victory over Inter Milan on Sunday came at a heavy cost, as star midfielder Kevin De Bruyne suffered a serious hamstring injury that could keep him out for up to four months.

The Belgian playmaker, who joined Napoli earlier this year, pulled up clutching his right thigh immediately after converting a first-half penalty.

Visibly emotional, De Bruyne was helped off the pitch by club staff in the 37th minute, fearing the worst after a history of recurring hamstring problems.

Napoli Confirms Serious Hamstring Injury

Napoli later confirmed the bad news in an official statement:

“Following the injury suffered in the match against Inter, Kevin De Bruyne underwent instrumental examinations at the Pineta Grande Hospital which revealed a serious injury to the biceps femoris of the right thigh. The player has already begun rehabilitation."

According to Goal Italy and Corriere dello Sport, the 34-year-old could be sidelined for three to four months, a massive setback for coach Antonio Conte and the reigning Serie A champions.

Top of the Table, But Losing Key Players

De Bruyne has been one of Napoli’s standout performers this season, scoring four goals and providing two assists in his first 11 appearances, helping the Partenopei to the top of the Serie A standings: level on points with AS Roma but ahead on goal difference.

The injury adds to Napoli’s growing fitness crisis, with Romelu Lukaku still recovering from a thigh problem sustained in August.

With two of their biggest stars sidelined, Conte may now be forced to dip into the January transfer market for reinforcements.

From Manchester Glory to Italian Heartbreak

After a decade of dominance at Manchester City — where he lifted 19 major trophies — De Bruyne’s move to Italy was hailed as a bold new chapter in his illustrious career.

His early performances had even drawn comparisons to Diego Maradona, but his first season in Naples has been anything but smooth.

Aside from his stellar displays, De Bruyne has already faced off-field tension, including a touchline spat with Conte and a controversial benching against Genoa.
