“Shivraj, take out time and come to Delhi; I want to talk to you"—this is what Prime Minister Narendra Modi told Shivraj Singh Chouhan in Bhopal the day Mohan Yadav was sworn in as the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister.

Chouhan had been Chief Minister for 18 years before being replaced with Yadav after the big win for the BJP in the 2023 assembly elections. In his new book, “Apnapan—Narendra Modi Sang Mere Anubhav", Chouhan says the BJP decided to bring a new face as the CM and he accepted the decision.

“On June 9, 2024, I took oath as a Union Cabinet Minister with the Agriculture and Rural Development portfolio. At that moment, I realised that when PM Modi said those words to me at the oath-taking ceremony in Bhopal some months ago, he had already had a plan for me. While the media’s attention was naturally centred on the new CM, Modi had already made a plan for me," Chouhan writes in his book released on Tuesday.

The journey of Chouhan from being a popular chief minister in Madhya Pradesh to a Union Cabinet minister in Delhi has been described by him in the book. “The day the name of the new CM (Mohan Yadav) was proposed, I was satisfied in my mind. At that time, this feeling could have come that such a big win had come while I was chief minister, and still I was not made the CM. But such a time is the real test of a party worker. Maybe it would have been natural to be sad at that time, but there was no impact on me due to the teachings of my parents and direction of my party," Chouhan writes. “Our party’s foundation is discipline and sacrifice. I do not believe in sticking on to a post; I was ready to do any work the party wanted me to do."

Chouhan said that at that stage, he vowed that he would help the party win all 29 Lok Sabha seats in Madhya Pradesh in the 2024 general elections. “I worked like a mission on this for the next six months. I went to constituencies that we had never won before, like Chhindwara, which once was considered a stronghold of one family. Ultimately, our strike rate was 100%—we won all 29 seats in Madhya Pradesh," he writes.
